Getting back into shape

Trying to fit into your old jeans?

We all want to get back in shape as soon as possible. But take it slow. It is normal to look pregnant for many months after delivery. Experts suggest waiting for at least 8 weeks after delivery to start an exercise routine. Dieting too early may result in your body feeling weak and the baby not getting enough nutrition from your milk.

Mothers that breastfeed lose weight sooner than those that don't because the body burns calories to produce milk. The uterus also contracts faster due to hormones released while breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor about when you are ready to exercise during your 6th week check up.

But yes, the party is over! Watch what you eat and the weight will come off on its own (some mothers lose weight after they stop pumping, not sure what the link is).

Start with mild abdominal exercises and build it up.

Many mothers suggest using post-partum tummy belts to flatten the tummy. In many cultures, it is a practice to tie the stomach immediately after delivery to help in uterus compression and to strengthen the muscles/bones in the back (because the bones flexed to allow pushing the baby out during labor). Some hospitals offer the abdominal belt which is covered by many insurance providers.  The cheaper alternative is to buy them online, they cost less than store-bought ones even after including shipping and handling.

If you don’t lose weight, you will keep it!

I wish I could tell you that stretch marks totally disappear, but they don't, atleast not completely. Most mothers experience darkening in the area surrounding  the breasts, and/or a line appearing from the belly button downwards. This may or may not disappear a few months after delivery as it depends on the level of pigmentation. Talk to a dermatologist for advice on improving skin appearance (pigmentation and stretch marks).
